In this Steamfast SF510 Review we tested a lightweight, full-size clothing steamer which offers excellent value for the money. This steamer is easy to assemble and store, delivers high velocity steam for 50 consecutive minutes and it can be classified in a separate category as a multi-functional, utility steamer. Not only does it work well with any type of fabric, it can also deodorize and detail vehicles.

The sturdy Steamfast SF510 makes garments look like a professional dry cleaner, removing the most stubborn wrinkles from clothing and stains from upholstery when the brush attachment is used. The brush attachment works with the steam to pull open the fabric weave to allow it to penetrate the fibers.

This steamer is a perfect way to reduce the wrinkles in individual clothing items or multiple loads of laundry. It handles coats, dresses, suits, delicate garments, beading or sequins on gowns or formal wear, table cloths, linens, carpet and furniture.

An additional benefit of the SF510 is that it penetrates deep without chemicals to kill dust mites, bed bugs, and it is effective against common allergens, germs and bacteria. For the best results, use distilled water; this is a precaution that works well for all at home steamers. Hard water leaves behind mineral and lime deposits, which over time will build up and cause problems with steam outflow, by clogging up the miniature ports in the head. If it is not possible to use distilled or filtered water, the manufacturer recommends regularly removing deposit build up from the head with, “Steamfast Lemon Acid” cleaner.

Steamfast SF510 Design

Designed with an insulated cool-to-touch hose, 62 inch looping, telescopic rod and clothes hanger to allow for vertical steaming, the rod is adjustable and detachable, it extends to 53.94”. The Steamfast 510 has a removable easy-to-fill tank, with a wide head that continuously blasts steam at a high rate. It has a 6.2 ft cord, 1500 watts of power and it is equipped with an automatic safety shutout, just in case the unit overheats. This lightweight steamer weighs a mere 10.82 lbs. has a built-in ironing surface which includes a cotton cover, pad and wood topper. The integrated storage/cord management system has extra room for other accessories.

This steamer feels like it could have been built a little stronger as heavy garments made the unit seem a little top heavy and the hanger could have built beefier.  While we never had any issues during testing, there may or may not be issues long term.

Steamfast 510 Performance

The Steamfast SF510 is a self-contained steamer and you simply put the clothing on the included hanger attached to the steamer.  The performance of the SF510 is great overall and it takes less time to use than a conventional iron. The wide spread head provides a reliable, efficient amount of steam to release wrinkles from a majority of fabrics. The steam is gentle on delicate fabrics yet releases a powerful stream to clean heavy garments.  Unlike some other portable steamers we have tested, the steam is continuous and it doesn’t require a manual pump or a release button.  We had really good results with polys, knits and twills and delicate fabrics such as lace, silk, rayon and chiffon while cottons only looked fresh out of the dryer good.  We found that deep wrinkles still needed an iron to completely remove them.

The unit heats up really fast, with ours coming in at 43 seconds and the easy to fill water tank has a capacity of 46 oz. and ran for 48 minutes.   Large rolling casters add convenience and maneuverability and the SF510 works well with or without the brush attachment. During testing, we preferred to use the brush attachment for heavy fabrics and upholstery and no attachment on clothing as it reduced the steaming time.

A few things that could have been better include a longer power cord and hose and our model did leak water from the tank.  As an everyday steamer, SF510 outperforms more expensive steamers in the same weight class. Simply hang a garment on the attached hanger and in a few minutes, expect complete wrinkle removal. When done with steaming, the telescoping handle retracts in seconds and the collapsible hanger folds in half for easy storage.

This Steamfast SF510 Review concludes that in terms of performance, this is a pretty good and versatile steamer for home and vehicle use. It is capable of smoothing all but deep wrinkles but for the price this steamer is an excellent bargain.

This Steamfast SF-680 Review highlights the advantages and disadvantages of purchasing a digital fabric steam press. In terms of achieving professional results at home, this steamer is in a class by itself; the SF-680 is comparable to a commercial roller press iron.  The Steamfast SF-680 can replace traditional irons, ironing boards, and pads since it gives excellent wrinkle removing performance while cutting the amount of ironing time in half. For stubborn wrinkles or heavy fabrics, all it takes is one touch to activate the steam burst function. To use, simply lay the garment flat on the pressing plates and close the SF-680, lock the knobs and then select the desired steam setting and that’s it. A digital panel automatically adjusts the temperature and stem vapor as necessary and no wet clothing from excessive steam bursts. This steamer will never rust, so there’s no need to empty the water reservoir after use. Just leave it and go. Unlike some other steamers, users never have to purchase distilled water to press clothes again as many steamers require distilled water to keep the unit from clogging up, which will save you additional money over time.

The non-stick Teflon plates along with the large stainless steel frame presses garments and produces terrific wrinkle removal without damaging the fabric. The SF-680 is an expensive steamer with prices anywhere in the range of $227-$270. If you are looking for one of the best steamers on the market, don’t worry about the cost as this is a quality steamer and it will more than pay for itself with dry cleaning savings.

The digital technology of the SF-680 is impressive because of its automatic detection capabilities.  This takes the guess work out of choosing the correct temperature for various fabrics with a hypersensitive dual vapor awareness system, which senses when the steam is too wet and reduces the moisture. The Steamfast SF-680 is ideal for all fabrics and materials event handling small, delicate items such as handkerchiefs, linen tablecloths and napkins exceptionally well.

Another advantage of the digital detection system that users can really appreciate is the auto-shut off safety. If the unit is idle, for an extended period, the steamer not only shuts off automatically, but it will also sound an alert.

Steamfast SF-680 Design

The unit is silver and black and features rust free stainless steel outside and large 250 square inch Teflon plates for pressing, which keeps even the clingiest fabrics from sticking, scorching or burning.  The pressing surfaces measure 25″ x 9.5″ which is approximately (26 x 9) inches, making it almost 10 times the contact area of most steamers.

This steamer is designed be moved safely.  To transport it, simply lock the knob and the press is ready to pack or store. The Steamfast SF-680 weighs a relatively heafty22 pounds has a 7ft. power cord and 1350 watts of electrical power.  The power cord is going to be long enough for most people, but a couple of extra feet would have been better.  This steamer holds 10 ounces of water and a measuring cup.

Steamfast SF-680 Performance

The Steamfast SF-680 Digital Fabric Steam Press is super easy to use with elegant digital controls which offer a wide range of temperature settings and are simple to use. You just need to select your type of material and the machine selects the proper heat for you, ensuring you don’t overheat delicate fabrics and making sure there is enough heat for the thicker ones.  Clothing comes out looking great due to its hot plates and heavy press.

This steamer has a molded heating element to create even temperature distribution, which is important given the large surface area.

The SF-680 is capable of steaming 20 garments at once, without refilling the tank.  Time to have the unit ready to use takes a little over four minutes during our testing.

The main disadvantage we observed was removing wrinkles in tailored shirts such as women’s tops, men’s casual shirts and the collars of dress shirts.  While the large, flat plates get wrinkles out of flat panels in clothing, the collars, pleats, etc are hard to do well since they are hard to lay flat before closing the lid.

Other downsides to the SF-680 is that the opening of the steamer is not very wide so it presents a challenge to place the clothing on the plate and the power switch isn’t conveniently placed.

With practice, it is possible to achieve proficiency at handling shirts. The advantages and benefits of using this at home fabric press steamer definitely outweigh the slight disadvantages. The performance is of such high quality that some consumers use it as a commercial heat press, without the steam function, to make t-shirts with vinyl letters and decals.

We found that spraying the clothing with a light mist from a spray bottle instead of using the steam burst gave the best wrinkle free results.  The burst of steam feature works but we had too much water on clothing occasionally when using the bursts.

It did take some time to get the hang of using the Steamfast SF-680.  Our first few passes we took a bit of time to get some shirts perfectly on the pad but found that if you get sections done and move the shirt around it made the process a lot faster and in time we got ironed results in no time at all.

Our impressions during the SF-680 review was that this is a great unit but not for everyone.  You get great, pressed results but items such as collars and pleats are challenging.

Steamfast SF-407 Fabric Steamer Performance

A perfect steamer doesn’t exist, but this one comes close.   Overall we were pleased with the Steamfast SF-407 review.  It’s a value-priced steamer and much less expensive to use and maintain than professional dry cleaning costs and it’s better than using an iron, because it doesn’t leave scorch marks or a shiny finish on black fabrics.

The Steamfast SF-407 steamer was ready to go in 44 seconds and produced hot steam that is excellent for wrinkle prone materials, such as natural fiber linen.  The unit works well on all clothing however, delicate materials and synthetic fabrics may not be well suited for hot steam, so use a small area to test the steamer before using with nylon or polyester. Use on delicate fabrics may cause water spotting and permanent damage to the garment.

We found that the SF-407 worked well on shower curtains, duvet covers, towels, sweaters, heavy coats and wool pants, but one thing to remember with this particular unit is that it works best on the underside of very, wrinkled clothing and the fabric must be held tight, for the first pass to get the best results.

The performance has a few minor drawbacks.  One is the water only steams for about three garments before needing a refill, however it only takes a few minutes to steam each item.  Also there isn’t a steam release button which means there isn’t a way to pause or discontinue the steam, it’s a non-stop flow.  Next, the unit is lightweight and heavy garments on the telescoping pole can cause the unit to topple over if you are not careful.

Be sure to cool the unit for approximately 15 minutes before storing and empty the water reservoir completely each time after use. Power can remain on when refilling the water tank, because there aren’t any safety risks associated with removal of the water.  Also mineral deposits will interfere with the steaming performance of the SF-407, as well as shorten the life of the product. Use de-mineralized or distilled water for long term care. De-mineralized water is sold as purified water.

Steamfast believes in providing exceptional fabric steamers, and the Steamfast SF-407 is a good example of this quality. The unit exceeded the expected performance and the advantages far outweigh the disadvantages. Overall, this is an outstanding product for the price point of a $100 or less.
