It’s a value-priced steamer and much less expensive to use and maintain than professional dry cleaning costs and it’s better than using an iron, because it doesn’t leave scorch marks or a shiny finish on black fabrics.

The Steamfast SF-407 steamer was ready to go in 44 seconds and produced hot steam that is excellent for wrinkle prone materials, such as natural fiber linen. The unit works well on all clothing however, delicate materials and synthetic fabrics may not be well suited for hot steam, so use a small area to test the steamer before using with nylon or polyester. Use on delicate fabrics may cause water spotting and permanent damage to the garment.

We found that the SF-407 worked well on shower curtains, duvet covers, towels, sweaters, heavy coats and wool pants, but one thing to remember with this particular unit is that it works best on the underside of very, wrinkled clothing and the fabric must be held tight, for the first pass to get the best results.

The performance has a few minor drawbacks. One is the water only steams for about three garments before needing a refill, however it only takes a few minutes to steam each item. Also there isn’t a steam release button which means there isn’t a way to pause or discontinue the steam, it’s a non-stop flow. Next, the unit is lightweight and heavy garments on the telescoping pole can cause the unit to topple over if you are not careful.

Be sure to cool the unit for approximately 15 minutes before storing and empty the water reservoir completely each time after use. Power can remain on when refilling the water tank, because there aren’t any safety risks associated with removal of the water. Also mineral deposits will interfere with the steaming performance of the SF-407, as well as shorten the life of the product. Use de-mineralized or distilled water for long term care. De-mineralized water is sold as purified water.
